Canopies cover fuel islands, drive-thru lanes, building entries, walkways, and parking areas. They look light, but they are exposed structures with large roof areas on few columns, which makes wind the controlling load. Each canopy needs engineered columns, connections, and foundations, plus coordination with lighting, drainage, and signage.
Florida engineering concerns
Open canopies take wind pressure on both the top and the underside, so uplift and overturning drive the column and footing design. Design wind speeds vary by location and risk category, and the footings have to resist those forces in local soil conditions, sometimes with a high water table. Canopies over driveways and fuel dispensers also need vehicle clearances that work with site circulation, and roof drainage has to be routed so it does not flood the pavement below.
How Grey Load helps
We provide structural design for canopy framing, connections, and footings, with the drawings and calculations the scope calls for. Where the canopy changes the site, we coordinate the site plan and drainage, and we coordinate manufacturer components with your supplier. Every project starts with a free consultation.
